UNCA Minecraft Server

Visit our campus while playing your favorite game!

It all started as a simple idea: creating a Minecraft server to bring the UNC Asheville campus to life. Lukacs and Avery, two graduating seniors working on their Capstone project, took that spark and transformed it into a full-blown venture. They used tools like Google Earth, drone footage, and on-the-ground photos to build detailed replicas of campus buildings.

Early on, the idea resonated with a sense of possibility—“I thought it’d be really cool if we had a survival server where people could come in and either help each other out or interact with each other.” As the spring semester unfolded, the project began to attract attention: “It started picking up a lot of unexpected attention.” Soon, it was clear that the server was more than just a digital experiment; it was a space where both current and prospective students could explore and interact. One insight captured that vision perfectly: “Both campus students and prospective ones coming in could go and explore it and have it as a place to interact with one another virtually.”

Working on the project, the team embraced creative solutions—from using custom data packs to mirror the campus’s unique brick colors, to leveraging in-game commands for precision. Reflecting on their journey, they realized, “I thought it was going to be a side hustle project, but it turned out to be an actual full thing.” Every step deepened their connection with the campus and opened new ideas about using Minecraft for educational and therapeutic experiences.

Lukacs and Avery are committed to keeping the momentum alive even after graduation.
