Swing Dance- East Coast & Lindy Hop (Term 1)

Swing, slide, jump, or stride your way to back to the prohibition era in this six-week comprehensive swing-dance course. We’ll start by visiting east coast swing, then move to lindy hop. East coast is a simple six-count dance that is appropriate for vintage and contemporary musical styles. The dynamic footwork and playful styling of lindy hop have preserved this eight-count dance as a copacetic favorite among dancers both seasoned and new. All skill-levels are welcome, no partner required!

Eskrima- the art of Filipino Stick Fighting (Term 2)

The Filipino Martial Arts known as Eskrima, Kali, and Arnis are true cultural gems of Southeast Asia. Traditionally passed down through families and tight-knit communities, these arts represent centuries of development and innovation. While they can be beautiful to watch and fun to practice, the Filipino Martial Arts are widely acknowledged to be among the most direct and effective combat systems known to the world. The material presented over this 6-week course is extremely effective in terms of self defense. The majority of our training will make use of the 28" rattan fighting stick, which may be purchased from the instructor. This course will cover single-stick, double-stick, and empty-handed fighting methods. No previous martial arts experience is required. Safety, Respect, and Good Conduct are emphasized above all else. Women's Empowerment & Self Defense (Term 1)

This 6-week course empowers women to find and effectively use their voice, increase assertiveness skills, and to take personal responsibility for their own safety. We will be teaching through the nationally recognized R.A.D. Systems of Self-Defense program that goes beyond teaching women physical movements to protect themselves, enabling women to realize their own power and act on instincts we often ignore. All sessions must be attended to engage in the simulation exercise the last day of the course.

Beginner Hoop (Term 2)

This class will provide everything needed to start hooping, including a custom made hoola hoop made by YOU and just for YOU! Hooping is something that is for everybody, regardless of age, sex, size, or sense of rhythm. It's a fun and alternative way to get your cardiovascular workout for the day because playing with a hoop often works up a sweat and makes you feel great while you're doing it. The hula hoop is a tool that enables us to explore and gain awareness of our bodies while having fun and playing with movement. This high-energy class will explore fundamental elements of hula hooping, focusing primarily on core hooping, but will offer some hoop "tricks" as the class progresses.

Reiki (Term 1)

Reiki is a simple and gentle hands-on relaxation technique that works with the body’s energy system to reduce stress and promote healing. Receive a level I attunement and learn how Reiki works, its history, what it heals, and how to use it on yourself and on others.  Reiki is becoming more and more popular as it is being recognized everywhere as a powerful healing modality.  Come see for yourself how Reiki can be incorporated into your life.

Square Dance (Term 1)

Come experience Appalachian Square Dancing, a tradition that has been passed down through the mountains of western North Carolina for many generations. Square Dancing is an incredibly easy form of dance to pick up and an extremely fun one at that! Start off by learning basic terms, positions, patterns, and dances. As the weeks progress the dances will become more intricate. For the last three classes a live band will play traditional Appalachian music. All ages and skill levels welcome, so don't be a stranger!

Intro to Kickboxing (Term 1)

Have you ever thought about taking up kickboxing for self-defense, competition, or fitness? This 6-session course introduces fundamental kickboxing skills and training methods that will harden you and set you on the path to peak fighting condition. Areas of focus include proper stance and footwork, punching and kicking combinations, knee and elbow strikes, blocking/checking/evading, and sweeping. No previous martial arts experience is necessary. 16oz boxing gloves will be required after the first meeting. Safety, Respect, and Good Conduct are emphasized above all else. We look forward to training with you!

Want to learn a practical method to keep your cool and experience more confidence and power in your game or performance? Scientific studies recognize the Alexander Technique's effectiveness at improving posture, joint mobility, back pain, and coordination in performance, everyday activities, and high-stress work environments. Learn practical steps to relieve stress, have good posture with ease, and enhance overall functioning for greater longevity in your career and more enjoyment in life. Open to students of all ages/experiences.

Qi Gong & Meditation (Term 1 and 2)

 This course will introduce you to several traditional methods of meditation that, when practiced regularly, can enrich your life physically, mentally, and spiritually. Qi Gong (chee-gung) is a practice of aligning breath, awareness, and movement that is intrinsic to Chinese healing and martial arts. This course will familiarize participants with basic Qi concepts and philosophy, simple root exercises, and Qi Gong exercises from Taoist (Wudang) and Buddhist (Shaolin) traditions. Special attention will be given to the Shaolin Liu He Gong- "Six Harmonies Qi Gong". Participants will also be introduced to Mantra Meditation using the Japa-Mala (string of 108 chanting beads) and other daily meditational practices from the Bhakti-Yoga system. This course is taught by Adi Purusa das (Edward Rey Baggott), a former Brahmacari Monk, initiate in the Brahma-Madhava-Gaudiya lineage and Chief Instructor of the Asheville-based Kuntao Martial Arts Society.
