Employment with Outdoor Programs

Thank you for your interest in learning more about working with Outdoor Programs! We are a program within Campus Recreation, and therefore train and work together as one Department to best serve our campus in their outdoor recreation pursuits. All positions listed below are only open to current UNC Asheville students.

Trip Leaders

Interested in leading trips? We offer hiking, backpacking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, climbing, bouldering, and more! We hire twice a year, and have the following minimum requirements for applicants:

  • Current CPR/FA/AED
  • Current Wilderness Medicine training, such as Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
  • Experience participating or leading within Outdoor Education or Outdoor Leadership. Examples include participation in the Outdoor Leadership Training Program, employment involving Outdoor Education at a summer camp, or participation in an Outward Bound or NOLS course.

How to apply to be a Trip Leader

We only hire twice a year, January and April, so follow the timeline closely:

January Hiring:

Email pgerman@unca.edu by Wednesday, January 9th, 2019 with your interest in interviewing. Include in your email your essay submission (prompt provided below), and 3 dates and times you are available from January 14th to 18th, 2019 to interview for one hour.

  • Attend your scheduled interview prepared to discuss each item on the checklist provided below. Note that some printed materials are due and required at the time of your interview.
  • January 18th, 2019 by 5pm-Offers will be made to applicants for trip leader positions. These applicants will be able to work office shifts, assist non-technical day trips, apprentice technical trips, and will be given a customized training plan to continue in their leadership development and sport trainings.
  • All new hires will be required to pass a background check and driver's license check.
  • All new hires are required to attend a Campus Recreation New Staff Training on January 18th from 8-11pm, AND an all day training on Sunday, January 21st for Outdoor Programs and Campus Recreation.

April Hiring: (dates to be updated by February 1st, 2019)

  • Email pgerman@unca.edu by (TBD) with your interest in interviewing. Include in your email your essay submission (prompt provided below), and 3 dates and times you are available from (TBD) to interview for one hour.

  • All new hires are required to attend a Campus Recreation and Outdoor Programs trainings in August 2019.

Bike Mechanics

Our bike mechanics offer a variety of services, including rentals for commuter and mountain bikes as well as educating our campus on care and repair for personal bikes.

How to apply to be a Bike Mechanic:

  • Email pgerman@unca.edu with your interest.
  • Phil will connect interested students with our mechanics and develop a training plan, which follows the checklist provided below.
  • Upon completion of the checklist applicants can request an interview with Phil.

Team Building Facilitators

Team Building with Outdoor Programs is an exciting job offering a wide variety of programs and groups. We offer 2 -3 hour programs on our outdoor Challenge Course, or 1 -3 hour programs indoors. All programs are customized to meet the needs of the group. Some groups include academic classes, student organizations, athletics teams, and local schools and churches.

How to apply to be a Team Building Facilitator:

  • Email lbelt@unca.edu with your interest and completed Campus Recreation employment application.
  • Leah will schedule and interview.
  • New hires begin as apprentices, working with assistant and lead facilitators on indoor and outdoor programs while they work on their team building checklists.
