iRec Spring 2012 Course Descriptions- 

Weight Training- Utilizing the new Sherrill Center's state of the art weight training classroom this course will progress through the foundations of weight and strength training.  Under the skilled direction of the instructor you will learn how to safely use all of the weight room equipment and develop a comfort with weight bearing exercises.

Introduction to Olympic Strength Training - Utilizing the new Student Recreation Centers state of the art Olympic weight room.  Omar will teach you the foundations of strength training, how to use the equipment safely and develop a plan for future growth.

Meditation- Learn the art of meditation in the new Sherrill Center Meditation Room. This hour long class will progress through the foundations of meditation and help you to learn a great method of stress management and relaxation.

Mind and Body Sampler- Want to add a deeper dimension of understanding and stress relief to your mind, while at the same time adding flexibility, strength, and improved breathing to your body? Get a small taste of three practices that are good for your physical and mental wellness. Great for beginners to any/all practices or for those wanting to add on to a current practice.

Beginner Pilates- Try one of the healthiest ways to tone your abdominals, strengthen the muscles along your spine and back, and improve your posture with mat pilates. The class will begin slowly by teaching proper breathing and pilates “stance”, then progress into the actual exercises, building in complexity with each week. By the end of the course you will know all the exercises you need to keep your torso longer, leaner, and healthier than ever.

Beginner Yoga- Find out what yoga is all about without any pressure… this class is designed for people with no experience. Start by learning about what yoga is and why it is so good for you, then progress into trying basic yoga postures. Proper breathing and alignment will be a major focus and will help prepare you for taking larger group classes. A good choice if you want to be introduced to a new way to build strength, gain flexibility, enjoy some stress relief, and make your life a little healthier in general.

Yoga for Endurance Athletes-  Are you a cyclist, runner, athlete, climber, or anyone else who uses your legs to the extreme? Come to a series of classes where the focus will be specifically placed on working strong yet TIGHT joints and muscles. Special consideration will be given to improving range of motion in the hip and shoulder joints, increasing flexibility in the hip flexors, hamstrings, traps, pecs, and other related muscles, and strengthening of the abdominals, quads, glutes, deltoids, and other synergists. Good even for those with no yoga experience..

Lifeguarding Certification- The primary purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguarding programs is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over.  Additionly, participation in ALL classes is required. You cannot miss a night. If you miss a night you will have to pay for a private session with the instructor to catch up.

Adult First Aid with CPR/AED Cert- The American Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult course incorporates the 2010 ECC standards. It will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in the program teach skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Students who successfully complete this course will receive certificates for Standard First Aid with CPR/AED - Adult which are valid for two years.

Swing Dance and More!!!-   Have fun, get exercise, increase self-confidence and meet new friends as you learn to dance swing - 4 count and east coast swing, plus get an introduction to merengue and polka. Learn fundamentals for social dancing that can be used any where in the world. Singles and couples are both welcome. No prior knowledge of dance is required.

Swim Lessons-  Dependents of both UNC Asheville and community member’s ages 4-13 can participate in Group Swim Lessons taught by experienced UNC Asheville Lifeguards/Instructors. Participants will be divided into three levels and will work through a curriculum designed to bring develop individual aquatic skills. Upon the completion of each session, each eligible participant will receive a graduation certificate and will be eligible to move on to the next level. Click Here for more information.

Nolan LaVoie-

UNC Asheville Campus Recreation Assistant Director - Outdoor Recreation and Education

Nolan has been with the Campus Recreation Department since 2009. Prior to his arrival at UNC Asheville, he worked as an outdoor educator at an all-boys boarding school in Virginia. He received his Masters in Education from Pacific Lutheran University and is a skilled climber and avid cyclist.

 Leah McDowell

UNC Asheville Campus Recreation Outdoor Program Coordinator

Leah is a UNC Asheville alumna and has been a part of Campus Recreation since her undergraduate years as an Environmental Studies major. Leah participated in the Department's inaugural Wilderness Experience in 2002 and graduated as a Bulldog in 2006. She is a Level 4 Kayak instructor and certified in Swift Water Rescue.

Judi Lampert

Latin and Ballroom Dance Instructor

Judi Lampert has taught ballroom and Latin dancing plus group fitness, stretch, and music classes in community and university settings for over 20 years. She has been a guest instructor at big band festivals, dance camps, and resorts - teaching from small groups and private lessons to over 300 at a time. Judi and her husband have over 30 instructional DVDs on learning to dance at www.dancelovers.com.

Aqua Fit

Lifeguard and Aqua Fit Instructor

Jessica has been an instructor for water aerobics and land fitness classes for over 8 years. She is a certified Pilates Instructor, Cycle Instructor and Group Exercise Instructor. Jessica is the former Aquatics Director at the Asheville YMCA and continues to teach throughout the Asheville community.

Omar Ahmad

Weight Training Instructor

Omar is in his second year as a Strength Coach here at UNC-Asheville. Prior to UNC-Asheville, he spent two years at UNC-Pembroke as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.He has a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Wellness Promotions and Masters Degree in Physical Education (Exercise and Fitness), and holds certifications through USA-Weightlifting and USA Track and Field.

Theta Michele Drivon
Alexander Technique Instructor

Theta Michele Drivon is certified by international standards to teach the Alexander Technique (1600 hours over 3 years). She has been teaching group classes through her private practice and through the NC Center for Creative Retirement since 2009. 
Theta teaches people of all ages how to sit, stand, and move with better coordination and more ease. This 6-week course (1-1.5 hour classes) will educate students about anatomy as well as habits of movement that impede strength and longevity. Students will explore everyday activities such as typing, walking, bending, carrying, as well as specific patterns based on student interests, such as yoga, playing an instrument, or public speaking.
