Goals

Department Goals:

  1. Promote student learning and development through recreational programs that prepare students for productive lifestyles, careers, and civic engagement.
  2. Promote healthy habits for the campus community through participation in programs, the use of facilities, and access to services.
  3. Make campus Recreation programs, facilities and employment opportunities welcoming and comfortable for African-American, Latino, Asian, and Native American (ALANA) students and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (GLBTQ) students.

Student Learning Outcomes:

A.) As a result of engagement with the campus recreation department, students will acquire knowledge, and integrate that knowledge in their lives, in one of the following areas:

  • Awareness and education of nutrition to encourage healthy eating habits
  • Increased physical activity
  • Binge drinking cessation
  • Smoking cessation
  • Reduced recreational drug use

B.) As a result of participating in Campus Recreation Programs, students will demonstrate one of the following learning outcomes (participation specific):

  • Outdoors: Sport specific skill development in paddling, climbing, and caving.
  • Intramural Sports: Teamwork, collaboration and sportsmanship.
  • Fitness/Wellness: Increased flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular strength.
  • Sport Clubs: Personal leadership, organization, and effective communication.
  • Informal Recreation: Appropriate equipment use and maintenance.

C.) Students will understand health parity as it relates to leisure time activity in the US; and Student employees will be aware that institutional racism in America exists as a result of the diversity education series implemented for student employment training in the department. 

 Operational Outcomes:

  1. Serve 40% of the student population through all programs and services over the 2011-2012 academic year.
  2. Students participating in Campus Recreation Programs will self report that their experience in campus recreation programs was positive, satisfying, and healthy.
  3. Participation by ALANA and GLBTQ students will maintain in Campus Recreation programs to meet the 10% diversity representation of the UNC Asheville student body.
