Campus Recreation Assessment Report for 2010-2011 

Department Goals:

  1. Promote student learning and development through recreational programs that prepare students for productive lifestyles, careers, and civic engagement.
  2. Promote healthy habits for the campus community through participation in programs, the use of facilities, and access to services.
  3. Make campus Recreation programs, facilities and employment opportunities welcoming and comfortable for African-American, Latino, Asian, and Native American (ALANA) students and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (GLBTQ) students.
  4. Identify constraints and barriers to participation among UNC Asheville students, faculty and staff and utilize that information to make programmatic and policy decisions that will better serve the University in the future.

Student Learning Outcomes:

A.) As a result of engagement with the campus recreation department, students will acquire knowledge, and integrate that knowledge in their lives, in one of the following areas:

  • Awareness and education of nutrition to encourage healthy eating habits
  • Increased physical activity
  • Binge drinking cessation
  • Smoking cessation
  • Reduced recreational drug use

B.) As a result of participating in Campus Recreation Programs, students will demonstrate one of the following learning outcomes (participation specific):

  • Outdoors: Sport specific skill development in paddling, climbing, and caving.
  • Intramural Sports: Teamwork, collaboration and sportsmanship.
  • Fitness/Wellness: Increased flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular strength.
  • Sport Clubs: Personal leadership, organization, and effective communication.
  • Informal Recreation: Appropriate equipment use and maintenance.

C.) Students will value multi-cultural recreational experiences through participation with and among a diverse population. 

Operational Outcomes:

  1. 85% of students participating in Campus Recreation Programs will self report that their experience in campus recreation programs was: Positive | Satisfying | Healthy
  2. Serve 47% of the student population through all programs and services over the 2010-2011 academic year.
  3. Participation by ALANA and GLBTQ students will increase by 1.3% in Campus Recreation programs to meet strategic goal of 10% representation which meets the diversity of the UNC Asheville student body.
  4. 50% of ALANA and GLBTQ students indicate that they feel welcome and comfortable participating in Campus Recreation programs and in using Campus Recreation facilities
